The background to the story is outlined in the early verses of Matthew chapter 28. He describes a violent earthquake and an angel rolling away the stone that blocked the entrance of Jesus’ tomb. If you ever been in an earthquake, then you know they are terrifying.
Matthew gives the background to a rumor which still existed at the time he was writing his gospel, the rumor that the disciples had stolen the body of Jesus.
